In 1944, the 23 year old was deported from Warsaw and forced to work for the German National Railway (Deutsche Reichsbahn). Together with his wife he was placed in a forced labour camp located within a school; his son was born in one of the classrooms. As a Pole, he secretly went to the cinema and into the air raid shelter at Humboldthain.
